My name is Kris Hauser and I have been a type 1 diabetic for 29 years. I’ve been fortunate to be in relatively good control for most of my diabetic life. One thing that has always helped me and my diabetes was being active. I was asked to give a speech on my decision on going on an insulin pump about a year ago. I came away from that experience with a strong desire to help other diabetics.
This past summer I trained to climb Mt Whitney. I went on four training climbs, and in August I successfully climbed Mt Whitney. I created an active diabetic website to document this. The web site address is: www.whatcanyoudowithdiabetes.com/
While I climbed, I keep track of my blood glucose values, my insulin delivered, my carbohydrate intake, miles hiked and altitude gain/lost. These can be found under the following links:
Please check out the web site and if you have any feedback or know of anyone who might like to see the site, pass it along. Also if you are anyone you know with diabetes has a story, please let me know.
Hi Kris, welcome to the Diabetic Angels and congratulations on being so proactive! As DA's we are always encouraging Diabetics to be physically active and to learn as much as possible about diabetes management, so they can stay healthy and you are a shining example of the benefits to physical fitness...KUDOS! Have you talked to the Diabetic Angel, Sebastien Sasseville, the young diabetic who conquered Mt. Everest??? He is a member of the DA's and you can search him on the DA website, besides, he's a great guy and I'm sure he would enjoy talking to you.
Take care and please stay in touch!!
P.S. why don't you write about your experience in one of the Diabetic Angel Groups, "Diabetic Athletes" or
"Fitbetics" I'm sure other people would enjoy reading about your journey!!
When I first saw the list of climbs you did I thought I had climbed one of them, but after looking at your webpage your Mt. Baldy was in CA! There is a Mt. Baldy in NM that I climbed with my family and it was an awesome experience!
