It has been my experience that the average Vet does not believe that animal "parents" can or will do what really needs to be done to properly "manage" the blood sugar levels of their animals so they treat all "parents" the same without giving them the option of caring enough to do what's really right for thier pet by telling them what proper management really entails and giving them the option of choosing to be a great parent or depending on the Vet....this must stop!
When my sheep dog was diagnosed years ago they told me to bring her in once a month to test her blood sugar and to give her a shot every morning at 8:00am....now I know that was ignorant!!!!!!!! And, they never gave me a chance to be a great mom for my dog who would have lead a much better life with diabetes had I only known the best way to manage her diabetes.
Animals with diabetes just like humans should test their blood surgar levels several times a day and in particular they should know their blood sugar level first thing in the morning and before they ear otherwise...you are feeding your pet and you don't know what their blood sugar level is...is it high or low? Without this knowledge you will shorten their lives because you can't properly manage their diabetes.
My sister has now become an expert in managing a dog with diabetes and now the vet and clinic call her for advice on how to manage diabetes in animals. They of course know about the disease but when the animal is out of the clinic they don't know how to advise their client parents on how to manage their animals diabetes at home and therefore...the animals do not get the proper care. They wind up in the clinc sick as can be much of which can be prevented if the parents were given the chance to learn about the proper care.
My only concern is that the animals we all love so much have the best opportunity for a great quality of life while living with diabetes, this is possible but parents who don't know what questions to ask to be educated by their vet or use the DA's as a resource. :)
